How to Crack the Crystal Colour Code
Stepping into the world of crystals can feel overwhelming - there’s an abundance of information out there, yet knowing where to start isn’t always easy. A great way to begin understanding crystals and their effects is by starting with the basics. One of the simplest ways to differentiate crystals and their properties is by looking at their colour.
Crystals display a vast spectrum of colours, often blending in unique and mesmerising ways. It can be confusing to know which colour correlates with which energy. While there are exceptions and combinations, some general guidelines can help you choose the right colour for the energy you seek.
Understanding the role of colour in crystals not only has a deep historical foundation but also aligns with modern studies on colour psychology. Sceptics often argue that there is no scientific proof of crystals' effectiveness, but those who use them in their daily lives recognise their power. The practice of associating crystals with chakras and energy dates back at least 6,000 years and continues to resonate with people today.
Colour psychology plays a significant role in our daily lives - from the design of our living spaces to the colours we wear on important occasions. Extensive research shows that colours influence us mentally, emotionally and physically. The hues we surround ourselves with can either enhance our well-being or disrupt it.
A great example of this phenomenon is the contrast between red and pink. Though both stem from the same base colour, their effects on our physiology and psychology are vastly different.
Red
Red is the first colour our eyes detect in any setting. It appears closer than it actually is, making us more alert. Physically, red increases our heart rate and activates our energy. This makes it a useful colour for spaces where motivation, creativity or courage is needed. Unsurprisingly, red crystals have been known for centuries to ignite passion, courage, creativity, vitality, stability & strength. Crystals like Red Jasper, Garnet, Carnelian and Red Agate align with the Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, which represents our base for grounding, sense of self and energy - our "I am."
Pink
Pink on the other hand, does the opposite. It slows our heart rate. It is the colour that makes us feel safe and relaxes us physically. Therefore, pink is a wonderful colour to have in any space where you want to be able to unwind, slow down, feel safe & patient. The classic pink crystal that comes to mind is, of course, Rose Quartz. It is the crystal of love & compassion. Yes, it works well for romance and relationships, but it does so much more. It helps the body relax & rest, it makes us more patient and empathetic (with others and ourselves!), and it calms and heals the heart. Other pink crystals are Pink Opal, Rhodonite, Pink Calcite & Morganite - all of which connect to the Heart Chakra, located at the centre of the chest, which governs our ability to love - our "I love."
Orange
The colour orange is known to make people chatty, social, optimistic & feel warmth. It is a great fit for any social space because it lends itself so well for positive social interaction or wherever one is in need of a warm, encouraging and uplifting energy. Because orange crystals correspond to the Sacral chakra, located in the lower abdomen - it is all about ,I feel’ - it is where we can boost our optimism, connections with others and create sensuality. Orange Calcite and Sunstone are both amazing crystals that can enhance positivity, joy, motivation & empowerment.
Yellow
Yellow stimulates the nervous system, promoting wakefulness, curiosity and happiness. This explains why Citrine, a vibrant yellow crystal, remains a favourite among our customers and all crystal enthusiasts alike. One cannot help but leave with a smile when picking up Citrine! Yellow is tied to the Solar Plexus Chakra, located in the upper abdomen, which governs confidence and action - our "I do."
Green
Green is another colour linked to the Heart Chakra. It promotes emotional healing and balance. Our eyes find green easy to process, which is why nature is so calming. A walk in a lush forest can be incredibly soothing. Popular green crystals like Jade, Aventurine, Malachite and Peridot have long been associated with healing and good luck.
Blue
Blue primarily affects the mind. It enhances focus, logic and communication, which is why it is often used in therapy settings. Blue crystals are connected to the Throat Chakra, located in the throat area - our "I talk" centre. Crystals such as Aquamarine, Blue Lace Agate, Turquoise and Apatite encourage honest communication and mental clarity. They can help us speak honestly, diplomatically and quiet our emotions to gain a better understanding of our own thoughts and assess our surroundings better.
Purple
The colour purple is rare in nature, therefore humans cannot help but be in awe of it. It is why royalty used the colour to signify their status. Whenever we come across the colour purple we intuitively start to wonder about higher realms. Purple crystals align with the Third Eye Chakra, located on the forehead between the eyebrows, which governs intuition and perception - our "I see." The most popular and mysterious purple crystal is the Amethyst. Not only does it help get better sleep and rest, it is highly powerful in its healing capacity. To top it off it can help us expand our spiritual capabilities and connect us to the Universe.
White
White symbolises purity and clarity, often used in hospitals to convey cleanliness. White crystals are associated with the Crown Chakra, located at the top of the head, which represents understanding and higher consciousness - our "I understand." Moonstone is a beautiful example for balancing energy, a boost in intuition and a stronger connection to other realms. Similarly, Clear Quartz and White Calcite also both help us gain a better understanding of the world and ourselves, creating a deep sense of knowing and wonder. Additionally, white crystals can often help us cleanse our space and our own minds and bodies.
Black
The colour black has great depth and it can give us a sense of power, but it can seem intimidating. However, black crystals are almost always protective. They can work as shields or even absorb and cleanse negativity. They can be incredibly calming and reassuring. Often connected to the Root chakra, they help us get centred and build inner strength. Crystals like Obsidian and Black Onyx are perfect for blocking off bad energy, while Black Tourmaline and Shungite are both phenomenal at purifying energy.
Because we naturally react to the colours of crystals, it is always worth trusting the ones you are drawn to. If pink crystals catch your attention, you may be seeking a sense of comfort and relaxation. If a striking purple piece fascinates you, it could be a sign that the universe is guiding you towards a deeper sense of awareness.
Whatever you do, remember—if you trust your intuition, it will always lead you to where you need to be.
